Health classes explained
Rate classification names, what they indicate, and what factors determine movement between classifications.
Life insurance rates are determined by rate classification. Classification names may differ between carriers, but the structure is uniform: Preferred Plus (also labeled Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, followed by special ratings for above-average risk. Tobacco users receive evaluations using a corresponding set of categories at greater costs.
What underwriters look at
Weight and height proportions, cardiovascular measurements and lipid levels, parental medical background including early heart attack or cancer, moving violations, pharmaceutical records, job and leisure activities, nicotine and tobacco consumption. Achieving the best rating requires favorable results across nearly all aspects; the Preferred tier accommodates minor variations; Standard Plus and Standard allow for managed chronic conditions including stabilized hypertension.
How to use the quote tool
When answering the health question, respond truthfully about your condition: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Quotations mirror this classification; the carrier determines the definitive rating following underwriting. When uncertain, request quotes for multiple classifications and examine the differences; the underwriting outcome determines the ultimate rate. Inflating your health status does not reduce the final premium; it only makes the estimate less dependable.
Susman Insurance Agency has resources to compare carriers whose underwriting standards accommodate your specific situation, which frequently provides greater impact than the advertised base rates.
